Contributor terms

How we thank and pay people who share genuine, first-hand travel stories.

Who is paid

Payments are for authors who live in Nepal (set on your author profile) and are paid by Khalti, eSewa or a Nepali bank account. Authors living elsewhere earn the same badges, Editor’s picks and homepage features, without payment.

Editor’s pick fees

  • When our editors choose your story as an Editor’s pick, we pay a one-off fee: NPR 2,000 for a featured story (a real trip, at least 600 words and 3 of your own photos) or NPR 5,000 for an in-depth story (at least 1,200 words with real costs, route and tips, and 5 of your own photos).
  • At most 2 paid picks per author per month.
  • We may check that a story is genuine (photos, trip details, a short email or call) before paying.

Ad royalties

  • Story pages may show Google ads. Each month we share 40% of the ad income from traveller-story pages with Nepal-based authors, in proportion to each story’s views.
  • Views count once per reader per day, only from readers who accepted cookies, never your own, and not while a story’s ads are switched off.
  • We use the final figures Google pays us, after its deductions for invalid traffic, and pay once your balance reaches NPR 1,000, about six weeks after the month ends. Smaller amounts carry forward.

Rules

  • Your story must describe your own trip, in your own words. AI help for polishing is fine; AI-written stories are not.
  • A paid story must not have been published elsewhere first, and stays first-published with us for 90 days; after that you may republish it with a link back.
  • Never click ads on your stories, ask others to, or use bots or paid traffic. Doing so ends your royalties and any amount Google removes is deducted.
  • Payment never depends on praising a destination, business or agency. Agencies cannot pay for traveller stories.
  • If a paid story turns out to be copied or invented, we remove it and you must repay what you received.
  • You keep the copyright; you give Recent Visits a licence to publish your story for as long as it is online. Deleting your account does not end the licence of a story we paid for; we remove your contact details and, if you prefer, your name. Stories we did not pay for you can delete or keep when you delete your account.
  • You are responsible for any tax due on what you receive.
