Privacy and cookie policy

We collect as little as we can, keep it ourselves, and tell you exactly what happens with it.

What we collect

  • Account data (email, display name) when you sign in, stored with our authentication provider (Supabase) and used only to run your account.
  • Quote requests: your trip details, name and message from a “Request a quote” form are shared with the travel partner you chose, and nobody else, so they can send you a quote on Recent Visits. Your email address and phone number are shared with that partner only after you accept one of their quotes.
  • AI conversations: messages you send to the assistant are stored with a random session id (or your account) to keep the conversation going and improve answers. Do not include passport or payment details.
  • Traveller stories: stories you publish, their photos, the trip details you choose to add and your author name, handle and bio are public. Drafts and stories in review are visible only to you and our moderators. Location data (EXIF/GPS) is removed from photos before they are stored. Your email is never shown. Votes and saved stories are private to your account.
  • Photo offers (optional): when you offer a story photo, we store where you live (Nepal or elsewhere, which decides payment), your answers about people in the photo and your acceptance of the photo licence. Payment details are sent by email only if we buy the photo, and kept only as a payment record.
  • Agency claims and applications (travel agencies only): the agency and contact details you enter, licence and registration numbers, and the documents you upload (your ID and the agency’s licence or registration papers). They are used only to verify the agency, are seen only by our team, are never published or given to the AI assistant, and the documents are deleted 90 days after we decide. Drafts never sent for review are deleted after 30 days.
  • AI writing help (optional): only when you ask for suggestions, your saved draft is sent to our AI provider to suggest a title, summary, places and tips. Nothing changes until you choose to use a suggestion.
  • Usage analytics: we record page views, searches and interactions with tours against a random session id in our own database. After you allow analytics we also use Google Analytics on public pages to understand traffic (page path, device and approximate location, no advertising features). It is never loaded on account, partner or sign-in pages.

Cookies

  • rv_session: a random identifier so the assistant and usage limits work for anonymous visitors (90 days).
  • Authentication cookies from Supabase when you sign in.
  • Your analytics choice is remembered in your browser’s local storage (rv_consent) and never sent to us.

Page views and tour impressions are recorded only after you allow analytics. Clicks on tours and quote requests are recorded regardless, because they are interactions you initiate and partners need them to serve you. We honour the browser “Do Not Track” signal for non-essential events.

Partner fees and advertising

Partner agencies pay a flat fee to be listed on Recent Visits; ranking and recommendations are based on fit and partner quality, not on fees. Editorial pages may carry Google ads, loaded only after you accept non-essential cookies; tour, agency and assistant pages carry no ads. See How Recent Visits makes money.

Retention and deletion

Raw analytics events are deleted after 13 months. Agency verification documents are deleted 90 days after the decision. Conversations of visitors who never signed in are deleted after 12 months, and so are quote requests that no account claims (24 months if the agency replied). Conversations and quote requests of signed-in travellers are kept while the account exists.

Deleting your account. Signed in, open Delete my account. You have 14 days to change your mind; after that your profile, conversations, saved trips and quote requests are deleted (agencies keep the trip details of a request, without your name, email, phone or message). Photos and stories we paid for, and the payment records behind them, stay on the site under the credit you choose (your name or “Anonymous traveller”), without your contact details; reviews stay as “Anonymous traveller”. Agencies can close their listing from the partner portal; reviews travellers wrote stay. You can also email privacy@recent-visit.com from the address you used and we will complete the request within 30 days.

Where data is processed

Hosting (Vercel), database and authentication (Supabase) and, when enabled, AI providers process data on our behalf under their respective agreements. We send AI providers only the conversation text needed to answer.
