For travellers
Story guidelines
The best stories help the next traveller: your own trip, real details, told honestly. Our team reviews every story against these guidelines before it is published.
Only your own trip
- Write about a trip you took, in your own words. Say when you went (month and year) and for how long.
- Keep what happened apart from what you think: “the trail was icy above 4,000 m in late November” is something you saw; “the best trek in Nepal” is an opinion.
- AI help may polish your writing, but it must never add places, prices or experiences you did not have.
Facts other travellers can use
- Who and when: solo, couple, friends or family; the season and the weather you had.
- Your route day by day, with where you started and ended, and sleeping altitudes on treks.
- Costs with the amount, currency, what it covered and when you paid, e.g. “NPR 2,500 a night for a twin room in Ghandruk, October 2026”.
- How you got around, and the kind of places you stayed.
- Permits and rules as you found them, with the date. Link to our travel guides for current rules instead of stating them as fact.
- A practical tip or two, and one thing you would do differently.
Fair to businesses
- If a hotel, guide or agency gave you anything free or discounted, say so in the trip details.
- No promotion: no phone numbers, booking links, affiliate links or “contact us” lines for businesses.
- Criticism is welcome when it is specific and fair: what happened, and when.
Safe and respectful
- No advice that puts people at risk, such as skipping acclimatisation, entering restricted areas without a licensed guide or flying drones where it is not allowed.
- Ask before showing recognisable people, especially children. Respect temples, monasteries and local customs.
- Leave out other people’s personal details.
Photos
- Your own photos, each with a short description of what and where it is.
- Photos you offer to Recent Visits follow the photo licence.
Writing style
- Plain English and short sections, such as Getting there, Day by day, Costs and Tips.
- Use the place names from our destinations, so your story links to them.
Never allowed
- Copied text, invented trips or stories written entirely by AI.
- Hidden advertising, or stories paid for by a business.
- Hate, harassment or anything illegal.
How we use your story
Readers see your story with your name and the date of your trip. When someone asks Recent Visits AI about a story, it says the details come from you and from when you travelled, and checks prices and rules against our verified guides. Stories that break these guidelines are sent back with a note, or removed.
See the contributor terms for Editor’s picks and payments, and the photo licence.
