Best Time to Visit Nepal

Autumn and spring are the classic windows, but every season suits some part of Nepal. Here is how to choose.

Nepal has two main trekking seasons and two quieter ones, and the right choice depends on what you want to do.

Autumn (October–November)

The most popular season. The monsoon has washed the air clean, skies are at their clearest and temperatures are comfortable at trekking altitudes. Trails and lodges on the Everest and Annapurna routes are busy; book flights and reputable guides early. Dashain and Tihar festivals fall in this period.

Winter (December–February)

Clear and cold. Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini are at their best, and low treks such as Poon Hill are quiet. High passes like Thorong La can be closed by snow and nights above 4,000 m are bitter.

Spring (March–May)

The second main season. Rhododendron forests bloom from March, days are warm and the mountains are still clear in the mornings, though haze builds by May. The expedition season on Everest fills Khumbu lodges in April.

Monsoon (June–September)

Rain most afternoons, leeches on low trails and frequent flight delays. Yet Mustang and Dolpo, in the rain shadow, are at their best, the countryside is green and prices drop.

  • First trip, classic treks: October–November or March–April.
  • Culture and wildlife without trekking: November–February.
  • Mustang or Dolpo: June–September is fine.
  • Lowest prices and fewest people: monsoon, with patience for weather.
